@ps: Mate, I would go so far as to just take the rifle OFF. Lay it down where you have access to it, pointing in the general direction of the fighting. If it gets hairy again you just throw yourself down at the rifle, pick it up, and start fighting. Regularly we'd do this when treating med stuff. Rifle off, casualties rifle next to it (assuming it's a 'proper' casualty, and they're not going to be fighting back any time soon...) and then you know where all the danger is that ISN'T the enemy.
I certainly wouldn't replace the pistol with this technique (I'd go so far as to say anyone carrying something remotely 'support' weapon style should consider this too...) But I know certainly as an engineer digging holes I'd not work with the thing slung, I'd lay it within arms reach pointing the way it needs to be so it could be picked up and used.
Rifles on slings can be a PAIN in the arse, especially if you're doing a thinking task (like medical aid) and not just something menial like digging. There are times when retention is important, and there are times when it's secondary. No one is going to take a rifle 2-3 feet from you if you still have your pistol on a belt ready to shoot them....

Appreciate the comments.
I've got 6 yrs of Infantry training with a rig very similar, but massively heavier than this rig. I know how this is going to work.
Only the med pouch is forward of my hips so going prone is a non issue. Nothing hits my thighs when I crouch or walk at a crouch.
Medics are issued handguns for that exact reason PDog. Every scenario I run through MY head I'm better off with 4 more mags than a handgun and a couple mags that weigh the same as the extra mags.
To each their own, but this is what I'm used to and no training required to be familiar with it. Everything is exactly where it used to be, there's just less of it.
I will have a small handgun(maybe a snubby .357) in an E&E kit for those rare cases where SPORTS doesn't put my longarm back in the fight. If the rifle ain't working, I'm outta there.

Slap the magazine upwards. Pull the charging handle to the rear. Observe the chamber. Release charging handle. Tap forward bolt assist. Shoot the fuckers. (I think it's actually Squeeze the trigger)

Interesting. Is that automatic, or is there anything prior to that?
I ask because the IA drills for the SA80 are different. Weapon stops firing, you look at the chamber;
no rounds in the mag no rounds in the chamber > new mag (Obviously, when you aren't a complete buttfuck private you KNOW it's empty anyway)
rounds in the mag none in the chamber is push pull on the mag to make sure it's seated properly.
cocking handle not fully forward is forward assist
cocking handle halfway with spastic brass? cry you've got a PROPER stoppage and they're a pain...
Starts with your O and then the order varies depends on the observation. I'm not up on AR operations though, so I don't know whether it's different because of 'style' or if it's because of mechanical reasons. (I DO know your charging handle is fuck all to do with your bolt, whereas ours is just a handle ON the bolt that reciprocates with the bolt..)

If you pull the trigger and no bang, you do sports. If you are that guy who has his safety on while performing sports, well, maybe softball or badminton is their sport.

My AK doesnt have a forward assist .....lol Like the kite winter. i was thinking of building a set up similar to that with the double saw/sustainment pouches. I liked my german belt kit. Wide 2-3 inch belt...h harness suspenders..only problem was it is made for that funky top hook and bottom double snap set up for pouches. Any alice /molle junk had to be zip tied/550 in place. But its a complete +51 set up...only reason i havent dumped it.

80% of AR failures are due to the magazine. its the weak point in the weapon system, so thats the first problem SPORTS addresses.

Pre HK update I know the majority of issues were either magazine (shite, apparently meant to be 'disposable', which is a crock of shit) or cocking handle related (it used to be round, as brass ejected it'd hit and return back the way it came, just before the bolt had time to slam closed causing a tasty stoppage. I'm not going to blow smoke up the arse of HK, but since they got their hands on it it's pretty fecking reliable. I've seen them have stoppages, but in the biggest period of use (I can estimate 20-30k rounds through the same rifle) I had with 1 specific rifle I saw 3-4 stoppages, 2 of which were fucked magazines like you mention being the weak point on the AR. Biggest weakness is that age old bullpup issue of left side shooting!

The AK does have a forward assist. It just doubles as the charging handle .

Anyone have a good recommendation for battle belt suspenders? I have some fight light suspenders from Tactical Tailor but they just lack a little as far as comfort.

Im looking at pulling the trigger on the Infidel or the S.E.T. War belt by Snakeaters Tactical. Had decided on the Infidel until you posted this....Why don't you like the one you have?

got the infidel... what i don't like is there is no good way to put a g-code drop holster on it. so now i have to look for a new way to drop my holster, but not a drop leg this is what i use: www.tacticalholsters.com/product/Accessories/GCA30.htmlso while i thought the belt portion on the left side would be a good idea, its not as modular as i would like. its a good system, just need to find something new that works with it. also, its a little bulky. also looking at snake eater tactical. if you get one, let me know how you like it.
