Ah, so it's like cutting your NBC boot down and putting it on your helmet; Some Infantry blokes did it because they couldn't get a helmet cover for the new style helmets (because the helmet came out and HAD to be worn, before anyone had time to sort a cover) so they used their old ones and used the rubber ranger band style to hold the helmet cover on. Said blokes were also pretty warry and so everyone copied, because even among soldiers there are weird fashion trends. No actual reason for MOST people, but there was probably a reason for 1-2 units at some point, which no doubt boiled down to having to hold something to something, or identify something, and having some blue tape laying around.

Those AFGs were designed with the as-far-forward-as-possible c-grip, so if it's not used in that way, I don't see how a regular vertical foregrip wouldn't serve better, unless you just like the AF better. Putting an AFA on an AK, which doesn't have an extended handguard, doesn't make sense to me, unless you just personally like it.

Definitely the light but, I'd skip the AFG. Unless you go with a long bottom rail, it will get in the way during mag changes. You can keep the current hand guard and DIY a mount with a short piece of picatinny rail. I use a 1" scope ring to hold avSurfire G2 in place on my AKs and have yet to have a problem.
