www.primaryarms.com/utg-pro-model-4-15-super-slim-2-piece-drop-in-handguard-mid-length-mtu007ssThoughts on the UTG Pro Super Slim drop in rails? I've gotten spoiled with not having an A2 in my sight picture on my AR pistol and now I'm trying to come up with a relatively cheap way to do it on my 16" that runs a 1-4x scope. Thinking is to have my gunsmith cut down and reblue the A2 (may or may not leave sling swivel and bayonet lug on there), install UTG rail, and then slap an MBUS front sight on the rail. I've read that BUIS on a drop in rail is frowned upon, but then I read that BUIS on free floated rail is frowned on and I'm seeing guys running it without issue. Plus with the 1-4x being the primary sight for the rifle and MBUS only being on there as a back up, I don't know how much of an issue it would actually be for me. Thoughts?

For that price you could do so much better. BUIS installed on a drop in rail are a no-go simply because most all drop in rails are not rigid and therefore your sight can/will move. BUIS on a free-floated rail is never frowned upon, that's simply the way to do it. Every leading manufacture adds a buis to a free float rail (KAC, HK, BCM, DD, AAC... I could go on and on. But you are on the right track...cutting down (reprofiling) your front sight tower is an excellent way to create a low-pro gas block and is the strongest of gas blocks you can have because you are utilizing the factory taper-pins to hold it in place. Something like this would be ideal... thearmsguide.com/7633/100-alg-defense-emr-ar-15-handguard-good-true/Here's another "deal of the day" GO! www.righttobear.com/Aero-Precision-AR15-Quantum-M-LOK-Handguard-12-p/apra400104a.htm

I think if I do go through with doing a different rail and getting rid of the A2, that might be the one I get. It'll probably be the one I try to convince my wife to switch her rifle to eventually. I keep going back and forth on selling my upper to family or friend and then buying a new upper from PSA, or doing the process of the rail swap. The selling upper and buying a new one sort of makes the most sense economically and also hopefully gets the rest of the family moving towards being better equipped. Apologies for the thread hijack. Edit: I saw that it's $75 from the link. I'd totally grab it right now, but literally right in the middle of buying our first house. Hopefully they have a deal like when cash is available soon.

I really like that rail you linked too, waffenmacht. Since I have no investment in pic rails nor pic rail specific components, going the M-LOK route from the get-go, would seem to be the right idea, for me at least.

Well, I'm having to eat my words, after my Daniel Defense Omega 9 rail arrived two days ago. After coming to terms with what would be involved with installing a one of those Aero Precision rails, I decided the Omega 9 would be the better route for me to go, and I am very happy with it. First of all, the craftsmanship on the thing is fantastic! Not a single bur nor sharp corner on the entire rail, every edge on the thing is finely beveled. Installation is very simple, as if you have played with Erector Set toys as a kid, like I have, then you have all of the skills and know-how to install this rail on you standard AR rifle. The best part about this thing, is that it is designed as a drop-in upgrade, with no permanent modifications required to the host rifle. You get a quad rail, and a free-floated barrel, without having to do anything more advanced than turning some screws. Its rather lightweight system, as well, adding only a couple ounces or so more, over the standard handguards. This produces a little bit more weight on the front of the rifle, but so does a light, DBAL, foregrip, suppressor, bayonet, or anti-zombie spiked muzzle brake. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking to free-float their AR's barrel, add a mounting surface for some accessories, and not want to do anything which requires advanced tools or skills.
