Hey guys, was rethinking my setup for when I get my bandoleer from UW Gear and had a thought. I already have a chest rig for when crap has totally gone downhill and we are openly armed. But for those situations where one would be a little more low profile with rifles/carbines sitting in the truck or otherwise out of sight, but having a decent amount of ammunition available to feed said weapon should the situation arise. What about carrying one or two 20rd magazines in your weak side cargo pocket? Came up with this idea because my cargo pockets on my everyday pants, wrangler cargoes, are just not big enough to fit a standard capacity magazine. I daily carry my first aid kit (TQ, bandage, gauze) in my strong side cargo pocket, my weak side holds my wallet, but I can move that to a regular pants pocket. I really don't like lower capacity magazines in an AR type rifle, I'm not a bench shooter at all, but for an extra magazine where a standard won't fit? I'll take it. What do you guys think? Obviously, this a moot point if your cargo pockets will fit a standard capacity magazine.

I get where you're coming from, but in this situation; Where is your rifle?

That's going to be a pound-and-a-half plus swinging around in your cargo pocket, and even if it has snazzy loops for magazines, it'll still get annoying fast. Not to mention, people trained to look for concealed weapons, look for relatively, heavily loaded cargo pockets. Unless you've got the stock-less rifle in a bag with you, I don't see the need to carry ammo for a weapon you don't have with you at any particular moment. If you're in a situation where you're in a vehicle with rifles on the DL and not stuffed into a bag, then you could still use a low-profile system to carry the mags on a low-pro rig of your choice.

In your vehicle or otherwise very close by. Then I would leave a rig next to that rifle, with 30 round magazines. Other than 'extra' ammo, there is no logical reason to seperate your ammunition that you expect to use from your firearm. Ammo that is not directly with your firearm can't be used. If you go down and someone goes to that rifle in your place, do they have access to the ammo? Or are they going to have to strip you for it? Get a UW Bandoleer (or something similar from the brand of your choice!) and leave it next to your rifle. Job jobbed.

Agree with @panzer....ammo with weapon. The only thing I would disagree with @panzer is I would get the UW Gear Bandoleer (NOT something similar) I love my bandy from UW and have it right next to my bump in the night weapon. I just need to get a bandy from UW for my Rem 870 now...lol

I actually am currently waiting for my UW Bandoleer, ordered it a month ago, waiting does suck. Was thinking 20rd magazines in pocket in addition to bandoleer.

Just another way to have more ammunition on hand without fully switching into a battle belt and/or chest rig in a situation where maybe you wouldn't want to be completely obviously armed (can't wear a jacket over a chest rig to conceal it in my AO, too damn hot to wear jackets). So let's say this setup is: CCW and spare mags for CCW, UW Gear bandoleer, two 20rd magazines in cargo pocket.

Makes sense to me. More ammo on hand but not as overly obvious than being in full battle rattle. UW bandolier was a good buy, white.

I do not see any benefit in carrying ammo while not carrying the rifle. if the rifle is too bulky and must remain hidden say in trunk might as well have a full bandoleer next to it.

Whitebear620 Try doing daily chores with your mags in cargo pocket. Do a 3 gun or similar match doing the same and see how it feels and works out for you. I tried it during an impromptu match which I did not have my personal rifle or gear. I was loaned the rifle and he was a beanpole and me a bit "husky" so his belt rig was a no go, so I Ran mags in cargo pocket and back pocket. This was a handy cap... One, I never practiced or trained like that. Two, The mages played hell getting out of pockets and i fumbled it (no training and not a good way to carry). Three, it really handy cap'ed my running and was uncomfortable as mentioned and bruised me up a bit... yeah I know "Suck It Up Buttercup". But what works for one person may not work for another. So try it and see what happens.

I would vote thumbs-down as well. Have the ammo with the rifle.
I however would go with a rig, rather than bando. I like bandoleers for having extra ammo to replenish my rig, but I've never really been able to feed out of them well. The UW rigs aren't much bigger than a bando, and if you're in a real hurry, you can toss it on like a bra (or jacket for the split-front rigs), and put on the back strap or clip the center together when you get to cover. Just a preference.
IMO, I don't buy the concealed rifle carry idea. Anything big enough to hold a rifle, but smaller than a full-blown duffel bag is going to look out of place. Grocery shopping with a tennis racket bag or camp chair bag or "concealed rifle" bag, is out of place. Once the rifles come out, unless you wear a trenchcoat to hide the rifle under, the concealed carry is over. Just my opinion on it.
Here's a video (of a different rig, that is actually higher-profile than the UW rigs, being deployed from a vehicle.
