I was puttering about youtube the other day and watching some videos from all sorts of folk, and one of them was from a training class.
The intent of the class was to put a tactical spin on the use of precision rifles at extended ranges (600m+).
Prior to watching the video I was very much of the opinion that the bolt gun's purpose in some sort of WROL situation was basically to be 'another firearm' you could give to someone half competent to increase your capability as a family, neighbourhood etc.
There was an interesting concept mentioned in the video, and while perhaps somewhat 'false', it did get me thinking;
Scenario: You've been invaded/ROL is buggered and you're getting hammered by a 'numerically superior force' (this could be a formed unit, or it could just be a lot of shitheads who happen to all want your stuff...) You don't have MUCH ammo, and you want to conserve it as best as you can. What you do have in addition to your primary fighting rifle is a bolt gun capable of reaching out to, say, 1000m. Rather than wait for them to come to you, why not take the fight to them?
Now I can see in some circumstances it would be crap (swamps, dense urban sprawls, heavily forested areas/initial stages of an earthquake, tornado damage, something like Katrina) But I can definitely see the merit in offensive action in a defensive role. As much as having a home side advantage in that you know your own area is a good thing, I would never want to fight, if possible, to defend my retreat.
I'd want to fight to either stop attackers 2-3km (again, I get that this isn't going to work urban, but I'm definitely looking at this in a rural perspective) away from my location, OR even use those contacts to draw attackers in a complete different direction far enough that they either stumble across someone elses shit and not mine, etc.
I can see the combination of a vehicle (ideally a bicycle, I think, for the lack of engine/noise) and a long range rifle as an effective way to engage an enemy with SOME ease, whilst being able to ensure a quality withdrawal and relocation to the next site of your choosing to engage again.
Thoughts, opinions, challenges to my foreign ways all welcome. I really think there is something to that ability to hold someone at arms length whilst you're kicking the shit out of them and they can't reach you. Is there a better way to manage something like this, or a better way to co-ordinate?
