Yep, your right, except: during a fight you should be moving, as firing from one position for an extended period of time tends to draw more bullets your way. True that. I would probably add that this is usually confined to the very start of a firefight, when you've all just gone belly down, no enemy is obvious, and if nothing else, a quick 'watch my tracer' will get everyone observing the right way and the opportunity for the TL to have his condor moment.to me, tracers only serve to confirm my position to an enemy that might be looking for the next target to shoot. I know i do this with muzzle flashes when trying to acquire targets. its very similar to the "drake method" that Max V talks about. Never heard it called Drake Method, but yep, that's also taught and is a good solid way. If all of the above fails, bounding overwatch is a good last resort. Thanks for the GRIT, its always interesting how different cultures come up with different ways to solve the same problem. Welcome. Can also just be used as GIT. If the Indication is for a fixed position, range is known.

Tracers are a weird critter.
They work both ways.
On LRS teams(the ones whose SOP's I was aware of) they were rarely used because we assumed we were outnumbered and thus anything that draws fire is not gonna work. Sometimes the last 3 rounds at the end of a mag were tracer to tell you that you were running out of ammo. Personally, I thought that was too much tracer for LRS.
If I was in a company sized unit (50-100) then I can see it as a valuable tool to direct fires.
Tracers work awesome for suppressive fire. People will duck like fuck when lasers are zipping overhead like Star wars.
Giving away your position sucks bad if you are outnumbered, but if you have the superior numbers, target direction and suppression are more important. $.02
