Hello guys,
I did not see a introduction but I hail from the metro area of SW Alabama, (not hard to figure out). I used to run a BCM AR but never really fell in love with it. I have always loved the AK so after doing some airsoft with the AK I decided to go all out and sell off the AR and go to the AK. I now run a 7.62 Arsenal, though still outfitting it.
Still training with irons to get that down but will transition to a red dot soon. Love the concept of UW gear and it seems to be the direction of me and my wife's preps. A minuteman rig will soon grace my loadout since the OSOE rig is a AR one.
Anyways, long winded but I have fallen in love with the SVD / DMR concept that Tx-Zen seems to run. Since SVDs seem to be impossible in my area to find, could a VEPR with some modds and love be considered a acceptable DMR type?
I know nothing of the VEPRs so would love to hear others views and thoughts on the rifle and what can become of it.

I dont have any first hand experience with the VEPR's, but, from everyone I have talked to who has, they are supposed to be quite nice. I would think that one could be set up to fill that role.

I don't own a VEPR, but have shot one in .308 and I think it would make a good DMR style rifle, definitely superior to a PSL.
The VEPRs are essentially sporterized RPKs, so they have the heavier barrel and receiver than your standard AK. In theory, this should lend to some added accuracy. Their availability with longer barrels is also nice, help get that added velocity out of the 54R round. Their fit and finish is quite high.
Also, something that may interest you is that Black Horse Arsenal is coming out(or may have already released it) with some nice polymer Dragunov styled furniture.
BTW, SVDs aren't impossible to find just in your area, they are quite rare here in the States and command a real premium. The only time you will see one for cheap is when someone is trying to pass a PSL off as one.

All the 54R rifles suffer from ammunition related accuracy problems not platform problems.
PSL's shoot essentially as well as SVD's, and VEPR's are the same.

I take it then that ammunition, such as the Hornady 7.62x54r match, would rectify this? Does surplus ammo give greater than 2" groups at 100yds then?

A couple more pics: Surefire was very helpful when setting the rifle up to run with a can. We went with the SOCOM 7.62RC because the 54R out of the 18.5" barrel would be excessive for the 7.62 Mini. Magpul helped us get the PRS Stock so that the shooter could properly and repeatedly get aligned with the rifle. This is a notorious family issue with the Kalashnikov. Had to return the NF NXS Compact after the media event, so now the rifle wears a Vortex Viper PST. Currently the rifle has Warne rings, but I am looking for a better alternative. Anyone have suggestions?

What does it weigh? Do you know a "before" weight?
