Yeah, this is a myth that has been perpetuated at every gun store and gun show for the last 40 years. The internet has made this even worse by compounding it, even though it has been proven time and time again that AR's are most certainly very reliable rifles. They do have their weaknesses though, just like EVERY rifle does.
An even bigger myth that gets perpetuated on the internet is that Palmetto State Armory rifles are super bad. This is an outright LIE, that is often pushed by people with specific agenda's, including people working on behalf of other manufacturers who don't like what PSA is doing.

Yeah this bugs me too... Why folks can't get behind companies making AR platforms for the everyday guy is baffling to me. PSA and BCA are two of the big ones that, in my opinion, are doing great things for this community. Keep your rifle maintained, load it, fire it, rinse and repeat. It's that easy.

No one on the receiving end of a projectile fired from an AR has ever presented irrefutable evidence of its unreliability.
