Guess I am firmly a fan now of the 5.45x39. What an amazing shooting round in an AK. More thoughts to come on this, but if you havent tried one, dont.....you will be hooked. You have been warned.....

Thanks for the warning....I have been looking at these, but just haven't "pulled the trigger". Just wondering why I need another round, but everything I read seems like this might be a way to go especially since the AK platform seems to be coming into it's own so to speak. Many more options for the platform than just 5 year ago when it comes to mounting options, scopes, red dots, etc.

Welcome to the darkest side of the dark side I have been a huge fan of the 5.45 round for a long time...originally I just though the AKS-74 was a sexy rifle but after shooting one I was really blown away by the performance compared to a 7.62 AK. Sexy and effective - hard to beat in my book. Maybe it's the uncle sam programming I received in the service but I'm a general believer in the smaller caliber concept like the 5.56 and 5.45. I trust the flatter trajectory and faster followup shots more than I do the idea that a bigger round is better. I'd rather have a higher chance to hit and to be able to shoot faster, and after shooting 7.62 and 5.45 side by side I eventually just got rid of the 7.62 rifles altogether. I've been happy with 5.45 and never looked back. I agree with you Hawk...you have to be careful with 5.45 or it will pull you in. It happened to me too

I would love to get into an AK-74 but I just can't handle having to stock up on another caliber and more magazines right now. Some day!

I went to 545. because of the price of ammo. And made it my general purpose rifle, be cause of its manors. In case you haven't heard of this, the word is not to use 545 mil-serp ammo inside a hardened structure. But V- max is awesome for long range or indoors. And stock up on ammo while its cheap. Right now mags have dried up totally. Word is, Suarez/US palm, may have some USA mags in the future. Seems like the Only US, ammo supplier at this time is Hornady. Around $19.00 for 50 rounds isnt that bad for premo, ammo.

My favorite new rifle: Built for me by Mike Friend of the Firing Line out of Wyandotte, Oklahoma. Shot several hundred rounds through it in a Jim Smith carbine course. Shot great.

5.45x39 is cool, but man, I just love the feel of shooting 7.62x39.

Is that a TIB bag? How do you like it? Thanks Yes, it is. It's OK for a bag, but I much prefer my UW Gear Chest Rig.

I went with the 74 myself, I figured if the Ruskies went to it then I probably should to, has light recoil, you can stay on target and share that 5.45 love!
