Just curious if any of you guys have experience with hollow points in your ARs. What are you preferences and why? My ammo stock is currently all FMJ as it was cheaper and also that if I had to use my AR for home defense the most likely path for rounds was into an outer concrete block wall and then another concrete block wall that surrounded my apartment complex. Now the wife and I are house hunting, the current favorite is not rural but suburban, much to my dismay but that's what work distance and other factors allow. Now the most likely path for rounds would be into a block wall and then the neighbor's house. Did a quick search and didn't see where this had been discussed. I don't have a shotgun and have no interest in using one for HD, it's just my pistol (which is loaded with JHPs) and ARs as options. So I'm looking for rounds that aren't $1 per round and that would work reliably in my PSA 16" and PSA 10.5".

New hotness? 77gr Razor Core is just a mk262 clone. It is better than ball ammo but not ideal from a short barrel. For an SBR or pistol you should stick with a barrier blind JHP. Two that come to mind are the Gold Dot loadings from Federal/Speer, and Federal's tried and true 62 TBBC load (XM556FBIT3).

I was being my sometimes facetious self, with the "new hotnesss" remark. I know Razor Cores are just Mk262 clones. From what I've found, most, if not all of the JHP 5.55 ammo is more than $1 a round. The Mk262-style rounds perform consistantly through different barrel lengths, as a result of needing lower fragmentation velocities. Black Hills even has what they call the TMK load, rather than SMK, which is a Mk262 mod 1, which has a insert which gives the rounds a higher ballistic coefficient. TMK's are more than $1 a round, though. www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2015/06/09/black-hills-77-grain-tipped-matchking-precision-5-56mm-ammo/

Mk262's fragmentation threshold is right around 2250 fps. MV from a 10.5 barrel is going to be realistically between 2300 and 2400 fps. So within 50 yards it becomes an icepick. 64 grain gold dots reliably expand down to 1800 although more recent testing says 1650. MV from a 10.5 has been hovering around 1500 fps. Consistent performance out to 200 yards. Less than .60 a round shipped. palmettostatearmory.com/speer-223-remington-64gr-gold-dot-ammunition-20rds-24448.html

IMHO the best Ammo is the one that meets your key requirements (effects and accuracy) while still affordable to shoot 1600 rds of on a carbine course and also afford to stash deep.
I have excellent experience with any of the Barnaul made 62gr HP 223s. Those are Wolf Military Classic 62gr HP, Brown Bear 62 gr HP , Silver Bear 62gr HP.
A buddy of mine used a Brown Bear 62 gr HP out of a 16 inch AR on a major Wild Hog with first shot kill despite only so-so shot placement. (admittedly at short range)
I have gotten 1.5 MOA out of a 20 inch barrel w/ 1 in 9 twist (admittedly sample was a bit small, just 3 separate groups of 5 shots each) extreme reliability in all my rifles and seemingly not too soft load (judging by the ejection patters of my rifles)
I have not tried the 55gr HP

Purely from a defensive application - like home defense - Speer Gold Dot 64gr or 77gr/Black Hills 77gr OTM is really good. Mild penetration in houses - based on some shoot house testing I've been a part of and really good on people. Border Patrol has been uses the 64gr (I think) for a while with great results. Typically 1:8 or 1:7 twist rates will handle these better than 1:9 palmettostatearmory.com/speer-223-remington-64gr-gold-dot-ammunition-20rds-24448.html
