What are you guys using for light mounts on your AKs? I have an Ultimak rail on mine and am concerned my plastic VTAC mount will melt...

I have used 4 different mounts on the Ultimak and have developed some definite preferences. I used a VTAC for a short time until I could find a metal mount that fit my needs. The VTAC mount never melted despite being pretty warm but I still don't think it is wise to use on the Ultimak. The biggest problem with it is that it is so thick that it obscures the view through my micro Aimpoints. It is a great choice on an AR but didn't work for me on the AK. I also used a light mount from KZ which I found out later was a house brand of Botach. It had sharp edges and a poor clamp design. Botach and KZ have also ripped off a number of small gear manufacturer's designs. So I can not recommend this one. The Vltor Offset Scout mount is the first thing that I tried that came close to working with me. It is a well designed mount that sits EXTREMELY low on the rail which is important with the Ultimak. My only issue with it was that I couldn't get my light as far forward as I prefer - which is pretty far forward. If you don't run your hand way out toward the muzzle this will be a non-issue for you. I can recommend this mount. The mount that I am using now is perfect for, at least for me. The Impact Weapons Components/Haley Strategic Thorntail lets me mount my light in such a way that I can easily reach the tailcap with my thumb but the bezel end of light is nearly even with the front sight base. This works with my preferred hand positioning and reduces shadowing big time. So, depending on your shooting style, the Vltor Offset or the IWC/Haley Thorntail should serve you well. Vltor... Thorntail (I now have the light even further forward than these pics show)...

But, I have some money coming in from stuff I've sold so I might be able to swing it. The reviews are positive.

Zen, that mount looks very interesting. Curious to see what you think of it after training with it a bit.
Matt, any issues with the thorntail and the way it mounts, and your thumb getting burnt/too hot?

Not so far but I usually wear gloves. Heat can definitely be an issue with the Ultimaks.

I am using a Midwest Industries/US Palm rail system (standard length before the extended length came out) with both my Streamlight TLR1 and the Inforce WML. It is absolutely perfect for the Inforce but I wish I had a tad more rail for the Streamlight setup. Both are mounted on the left side as far forward as possible and I use my right thumb to operate the switches.
