I am looking for opinions and thoughts base on experience of using night vision & thermal, and maybe what to add. If you have a PVS-14 that was set up for mainly helmet mount, and also have picatinny rail mount for adding it to a rifle. And you have an Eotech 320 thermal monocular that is a hand held unit. Would there also be a place to add some additional night vision, possibly handheld or weapon mounted. Looking at things like a PVS-2 or PVS-4, both of which can be found at a fairly inexpensive price, these can be weapon mounted to rifles like the AR15 & M1A, and have a proven US Military field record. I do also see things like the Sightmark Photon-XT, or ATN units. Thoughts please?

I have used mostly the standby of PVS-14 in combination with a IR laser on the weapon. (In my case a DBAL I2 from here: www.jrhenterprises.com/DBAL-I2-IR-and-Visible-Red-Laser-DBALI2RED.htm ) My NightFighter rifle is a Sig516 with that DBAL and a AimPoint PRO (even though I prefer EOtech sight pictures, the PRO can be turned super low so in a pinch can be used w/ PVS14 and its a bit lighter which I value on my NightFighter as it has alot of crap on it anyway). I also run a IR capable Weapons Mounted Light from INforce on it. The WML can really increase the effectiveness of your PVS14 if used judicously and also for more accurate nightfire via IR laser can reduce the IR laser dots "bloom" for more accurate fire. I did drop the MBUIS from this rifle since at night it wont work anyway and my set up has other inherent back up (vis laser in daytime or dusk) The reason this set -up is so common is because it works well. I and others whose judgment I respect, are ambivalent about weapons mounted night sights. Why? because your NightFighter set up rifle is going to be a bit heavy anyway due to the extra DBAL or PEC and WML. Putting a huge night sight on it will make it unwieldy and will sveraly lessen its daytime ability. Whereas the setup I described can run daytime as well.

Weapons mounted NV is a PITA. Ideally you want your NV on your head to give you better situational awareness. Even when the PVS 4 was the new hotness , it was primarily used on fixed weapons- read M60 on a tripod. If you could pic one up for cheap it would be a good deal for observation for someone who doesn't have other NV, but it is about 1/10th as good as a 14.
I have toyed with the idea of getting a mount for a 14 in the event I need to use my rifle in a designated marksman, overwatch type role. But that is pretty lowe priority.

Thanks for the replies. I already run a PVS-14 helmet mounted, Dbal on the rifle, and a Surefire Vampire light. Helmet mount is the way to go IMHO, over weapon mount. I have used several PVS-14's that were weapon mounted, and they work fine, but I have been told that the vibration of the rifles action can be hard on the PVS14. I really prefer the helmet mount, as no matter where you turn your head the NV will go as well, versus having to always look through the weapon. Several people that I know run the PVS-7, and I have used them in the past. I much prefer the PVS-14 over the PVS-7, as the PVS-7 you tie up both eyes, and the PVS-14 you only tie up one eye.
My thoughts on picking up a PVS-2 or PVS-4 stated when I can across some decent pricing on a few, that these can be run on a rifle or from an observation platform like a tripod, they are battle proven for working when firearms mounted. These would make a nice backup or an additional piece of gear for the just in case. But after doing a little looking, I stumbled across some of the new digital stuff like the Sightmark Photon, of which I have no experience with, they can be had for under $500 each, and these seem to get good reviews from varmint hunters and TX hog hunters.
So far I haven't added anything additional as of yet and not in a hurry. Just thinking out loud and looking for peoples opinions based on experience.

I am sure Robert from JRH will match that price if presented by it. I try spend my dollars with vetted patriots.
Robert is one such individual. He also comes out to train at MVT and elsewhere.
He is one of us.

I went to a class just the other weekend. And there he was.
He had even brought out an extra AimPoint from his store because he had heard someone was short. I didn't need it, but the thought was appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for their input. After researching the PVS-2 and PVS-4 with others that have used them in the field, the consensus is their technology works, is tough, but is old technology for clarity, and the funds could be better used elsewhere. So I found a good deal on another PVS-14 to add to the gear locker. Now to find an additional Dbal or something similar.
