further to other posts with some useful hints;
That man needs to move as part of a 3, not a pair.
He's starting to become a section level asset that needs moving with support but can't be deployed as a normal rifleman (which most OTHER section assests aren't hampered by).
He'll be of specific use, and less use in surpressing where there are numbers involved... Just be aware of capabilities and constraints and employ carefuly.

Bottom line is it's a matter of the guy being allowed in the group now to add something, versus not having him at all.
I suppose it comes down to whether one considers constant combat to be the primary mode of life after an event or not.
But thanks for the replies.

Totally agree. A bloke (or lady) turning up without a rifle can still dig, water crops, treat wounds, prepare meals, fetch & carry etc.

People overlook iron sights far too often, or only consider them as as a backup option. I still think people need to learn to fight irons, and I'd rather see two riflemen with irons than 1 with an optic.

Perhaps if you let him in your group, assess his skills and run him through some drills. Even in close quarters I think he'd rapidly figure out the main disadvantage of the shotgun: limited rounds. Yes, it's OK, if you have a squad who can keep firing as you top off, but I think it becomes more of a hindrance with the fewer people you have.
In WWI, when everyone had 5 round bolt guns (I suppose the SMLE had 10), the shotgun was not at so much of a disadvantage in that arena and acted as a trench broom quite well.
It's a hell of a weapon so long as the fight doesn't last longer than your ammo carriage, I suppose.

I like the shotgun and think for base defense or what not they could be used with no issue.
Everyone has a budget and sometimes a good 12 ga is all you can get, realistically a fight happens sub 50 yards and the shotgun can defenetlu put a hurting on someone at that range.

On wolffpack's point of shotguns having limited rounds; because a shotgun fires several pellets at on time, its kinda like a weapon which only has a burst-fire setting. Its not so much that its firing less projectiles down range, its just that you're going to be firing more projectiles at one time, and thus having to manage additional factors of decreased precision accuracy and necessitating additional reloads. Every trigger pull is going to put some rounds down range, but you're going to have fewer trigger pulls until a reload is needed. One advantage a shotgun (most models at least) have, is they are able to be topped-off more economically, since you don't remove remaining rounds from the weapon, like with a modern rifle fed from detachable box mags.
