I just did an Ironman 70.3 this weekend. It reminded me of something that I'd almost forgotten. Sometimes you really have to push through your limits to remind yourself of what pain and suffering feel like. I know some have said: "you don't need to train to be miserable". In some contexts, I guess that's true. But in our case, we all live pretty comfortable lives, as in you have a roof over your head, all the food you want to eat, and plenty of everything else you need. I think we need to be reminded of what the suck feels like, just in case you might have to go there again.
Think about it. When was the last time you really challenged yourself with a truly hard task? I know in my case it's been many years since I did anything this difficult, perhaps even back to my MC days. Really blew the carbon out of the cylinders, so to speak.
What I re-discovered was it was just as much mental as it was physical. To keep your headspace right was just as important as being able to do the physical effort.
So let me re-emphasize this isn't an intellectual exercise. You need to get out and train, HARD, to exercise body, mind, and spirit. This is what separates those that are serious about self-defense, from all the hobbyist, who just want to talk about it online.
I highly encourage each and every one of you to go out and challenge yourself with something. Know what it's like before crunch time.

Great job, congrats of finishing. I have a shirt that says Good thing comes to those that wait, (but the words 'that wait' has a red line thru them and words written in red says WORKS THEIR ASSES OFF!) On the back it says Nobody ever drowned in sweat!
PT sucks, there's no way around it. Embrace the suck.

One of the things that I try to do once or twice a year with the family kicking and screaming is to turn the AC off in the middle of summer and the heat off in the middle of winter for a couple of days and cook only with open fire. This year I didn't need to do it voluntary as a flood took my AC out and we had to relocate for a few days until the water receded. Dix is absolutely correct in getting your headspace right in preparation for the suck. Any type of SHTF scenario can happen at moments notice and the ones who are prepared to deal with it accordingly and "appropriately" are the ones who will rule the day!

It was like, yeah, I remember this. It's not very comfortable, in fact it straight out sucks, but it needs to be done.
