Awesome, I'll never be able to afford that, but I wish a friend had one.

Well then we should agree to disagree. I have looked through various units, including some Rooshun stuff and was not impressed. What you get is not that much better than the nakid eyeball. It doesn't penetrate into the nook and crannies very well, where you can really see the target indicators. If you think the non-genIII stuff works for you in your AO, hey drive on. I think what I think, you think what you think. Cheers.
Overall, I think using your sense of hearing will serve you better. Unless your opfor is really good, and not making any noise at all, you're gonna hear them most times before you see them. At least in my experience, in my AO.
This stuff isn't some magic talisman. You have to have good fieldcraft to protect your area, not reliance on some hi-tech gadgetry.
Bottom line, get spun up in individual movement and SUT before you rely on this stuff. It makes a great addition to your skills; it doesn't replace the need for them.
Moral to this story is you can no longer use the cloak of darkness to hide in. You have to act like it's high noon out there. Cuz if opfor has NV, it is.
BTW, about the only thing ACU is good for is it's performance in low light, and under NIR. In a monochromatic world, this pattern becomes on par with about any other digital. So yeah think of it as your "night digital" if you're using it.

I agree that it's a slight enhancement of old school ways until you get to gen111 but it is an enhancement none the less. Albright it's only going to help in a static survey mode as mounting gen 1 and trying to move around is going to hamper you.

Curahee: Seems like ACUs are not bad at night? Yes, they do work at night. Its about the only time they work. Both under NV and to the MK1 eyeball.

Albright it's only going to help in a static survey mode as mounting gen 1 and trying to move around is going to hamper you. An Armasight Spark is the only Gen 1 useful head-mounted, but only under a very limited set of lighting conditions. Magnification is a big part of this too, a lot of the lower end Gen 1 units are magnified 2-3x. You're not gonna be walking around with a magnified monocular to your eye even if it worked well as night vision. The lower the magnification the better, because you want a larger FOV. Gen 1 are useful for static observation, or to take a quick peek around when patrolling at night. You can spot someone with poor light discipline at a further distance or you can tell if someone is using IR light. A lot of folks have very poor IR light discipline simply because they don't expect people to see it. For this reason I suggest anyone that will never be able to afford Gen 3 to think about some Gen 1.

Every time I see a picture of some piece of clothing or gear in ACU that has been dyed it still just looks like ACU to me. But great picture nonetheless currahee

I have a set of 14's and don't regret the purchase at all. They are game changers and for the AC during a shtf event they have so many more uses than just at the fire team level. It's one of those tools you don't fully appreciate until you own it. FLIR PS32 to follow because although the 14 is awesome there are things nods can't do
