I was wanting to have it in .308 as that will be much easier to find in a SHTF situation than 300WM or 338Lapua.

Well .308 will get you from 600-900 if your a good shot easy enough, but IMO that's not enough extra reach to justify it.
Making head shots past 300 is not going to be a common need IMO and inside of that I make them with my 556 carbine.
1st round hits smaller than MOM past 300 are not that easy either when you add wind calls to the equation.
There is a big training curve between tack driving at known range with wind flags or zero wind and shooting over several ridge lines with up to 4 wind corrections to calculate.

I really appreciate my Galil ACE in x51. My expectations were thoroughly fulfilled in its intended roll and then were far exceeded when let out to run at more intermediate distances.
Just like most folks on the right coast, my distances are going to be relatively short, sub 500m. This is further exasperated by my suburban AO.
The ACE will do whatever I ask of it with what I feed it. I can dependably and reliably print 1 to 1.6 moa at 100m with defiant munitions and lake city. It opens up by better than an inch with Winchester and yet another inch with Red Army Standard. I'm still very pleased with 2-3" for a DMR and I'm not particularly concerned about chasing accuracy.
Further, the mags.
Plain old basic and plentiful Magpul SR25's. Enough said.
Compared to my M1A Bush gun, not Scout, the galil wins hands down in most pragmatic and conservative terms.

I had a PTR-91. I found the accuracy to be fine for a battle rifle, but less than I’d expect from a DMR.
I have two AR-10 rifles. Both have very good barrels and are about as accurate as the shooter. Neither of them cost me more than $800
That said, my favorite DMR is my Vepr in .308 despite the fact that they are pretty much unobtainium these days (thanks, Barry).
The rifle is capable of shooting better than 1 MOA with OTM loads, and is basically an over-engineered AK, which makes it compatible with a lot of aftermarket commercially available upgrade parts.

My FAL was/is MOM, but I let her rest in the safe....She will be hauled out if SHTF and the group needs a little more umph from a round for vehicles and such. But like others, being in the deep south having to reach out > 100yds will be the exception.
