Depending on which projection you are using, your co-ordinates can be horrendously far out. This map, showing the USA in 8 different projections, shows how badly you can get your co-ordinates wrong, without a good grounding in how to use a map/GPS properly in concert with each other. For the sake of simplicity, focus on coastal areas, and how far apart the same coastline is displayed, depending on the projection. For good solid navigation, if you ARE going to use a map with a GPS, make sure your GPS is in the correct projection, and datum. WROL/SHTF, or just plain hiking. If you're set up right, and you can communicate your GPS location, you can get help to hand very effectively. If you are set up wrong, they may end up sending help to the WRONG STATE. Just some food for thought, for those who may not have played with, or have a full understanding of GPS.
