I have been through many knives over the years but have ended up with these. I will always have my Forest Trail made by Blind Horse Knives. Blade is O1 tool steel (high carbon) flat grind, 90 degree spine, with comfy contoured G10 scales. I also often have a Mora in my ruck for small carving tasks and cleaning fish/game. On my kit I keep a Gerber Crucial which is just a minimalist multi-tool.

That is a pretty solid working knife arsenal.

I know one knife doesn't do all jobs, but im on a budget and just starting to get into prepping. If I were to go out and buy one general purpose knife to add to my kit, what would you guys recomend? I'd probably have to keep it under $200. I already have a Benchmade Rant with a 5 inch D2 tool steel drop point blade. Its a great knife but it rusts easily. I need something in stainless for field use.

I need something in stainless for field use. Wow, general purpose knife. Well you're right, there isn't one knife to do all jobs, so I guess the question is what is "general purpose" for you (or what do you think you'll be doing the most of with this knife)? Fighting Skinning deer, or fish Carving arrows or spoons Baton Prying things open The list can go on and on. I'm a big fan of ESEE knives due to their ruggedness and lifetime warranty of the knife. I can pass it on to my grandchildren and as long as the company is in business they will replace it free if they break it. Having said that, once you buy one hold on as you'll want more. I have the Izula II, 3-mil, laser strike and the 6. I like them all. If I was made to choose one of those I listed to go into hell with I think I would take the ESEE-6. I can fight with it, carve, skin and pry with it and not be afraid of it breaking. I'm not concerned about them rusting as I use them and after I sharpen them I'll throw a little oil on it. You should be able to get any of those for less than $200 I believe. You have a 5" blade now, so maybe an ESEE-3 would be good for you. Of course if you really want a sharpened pry bar that you can go into hell with, stay awhile and then come back and fight zombies you may want to look at the ESEE-5. That's a beast. Everyone has an opinion, that's mine. Here's a pic of the -5 Attachments:

yeah, esee kicks ass. great prices too, and you can find good deals on their forum. for 200, i'd get an edc, like the izula, a good machete, tramontinas are about 10 bucks, and a field knife, esee 6 probably.

Otis and I are tag teaming you.... Just checked on www.bladehq.com (just the first knife site I checked so look around) ESEE-6 ----$110.00 ESEE-3 ----$110.00 ESEE Izula neck knife (you can paracord the handle) ---$46 ESEE Zancudo Frame lock folder ----$28 So, you can keep your 5" and get the ESEE-3, Zancudo and Izula neck knife all for under $200 If you don't like your 5", sell it or keep it as a backup and get the ESEE-6 and Izul & Zancudo There, problem solved.... Lol, just trying to help. Seriously though there are a lot of good blades so you'll have many choices once others chime in.

The ESEE-5 is very appealing. I may have to pick one up.

The ESEE-5 is very appealing. I may have to pick one up. It's a beast, but a bit heavy. I've wanted one for a long time, but with my ESEE-6 and an ESEE-3 mil, I just haven't pulled the trigger. I know someone here on the board has one and he likes it. I truly believe that the ESEE blades will last a long time. You can go to the ESEE forum and see what abuse they take and keep going. You will be hooked when you join the cult

yeah, the 5 is awesome. i got to handle one for a passaround a few years ago, and i really dig it, but can't justify getting the 5 when i already have the 6, junglas, lite machete, two 3s, izula and candiru. besides, i really want the cm-6 now...
the 5 is absolute overkill unless you need to break into, or out of, a fuselage. then its just right.

Yeah, the -6 does what I need right now. Same as the LS and -3 serves me for now and I don't have a -4. The junglas is sweet, but I have no need for that now. I love my ESEEs though. otis...do you find that you baby some other blades, but you don't care what you do to the ESEEs because you know it prob won't break and if it does ESEE will stand behind their product?

Fixed blade field knives are a very personal choice. I have found that no one blade does everything in the field. I think you need to choose between a utility knife and a fighting knife. A utility knife works great for everyday chores but isn't the best blade for fighting. A fighting knife generally sucks at every day tasks.
As much as I want to love it, the K-bar is a perfect example of trying to get one knife to do everything. I like the ESEE-3 for general field work, and the Hissastu fixed blade for a fighter. For EDC, I like the folding Hissastu and the "RAT" folder, made pre-ESEE.
So I agree with the thought of shorter, more usable utility blades, and dedicated fighting knives. With axes and machetes for chopping chores. If not chainsaws.
