Well you know, I get slagged for saying this stuff on other websites, but reloading prone, with retention, is totally different out in the bush, than the weapons manipulation drills you do on the square range and/or urban combat. Hawkeye did a perfect illustration of why this is so.
The other thing that comes to mind, is sequence of movement. Even if you "speed" reload and let the mag fall to the deck, there's nothing that says you can't retrieve it right before displacing. So even though you execute a "speed" reload, you can also execute a reload with retention, merely by retrieving your mag right before you move and/or when there' a lull in the fight. Is it that fucking hard to think these two techniques could be combined? Evidently for some folks.

+1 I know I'm harking back to military doctrine, and this isn't the same mindset, entirely. However; I've always been taught that when you're preparing to move you check you've got everything, fasten any pouches you might have opened, crawl back, over to one side, and get up AWAY from your direct cover (where the bad man is pointing his rifle) As you & Hawkeye have pointed out; Stuff it down your shirt. 'Dump' pouches are relatively newfangled, but I do like them. But there is NOTHING wrong with throwing them down your shirt, and sorting it out later. I honestly can't comprehend why people wouldn't try to retain magazines.

Bingo!
PS> I like the way that slip pocket dump pouch is easy to use in your video. Does it naturally lay open so just the motion of putting a mag in the "jacket" hit the pouch or are you smooth from a million reps there Hawkeye? Would like to see a closeup video of that puppy in use if you can manage it?

On our Mk2 rigs, there is a reinforced tab that sticks up on the rear pouch that guides the mag in and causes it to open as you insert the mag. On our Mk3 rigs, which is what I'm using here, there is no pouch. I'm just stuffing it behind the rig. With the rig fitted/adjusted properly, you can get a mag or two behind it quite easily, and it will stay there short of you running a half mile or doing spetznaz flips or something.... I can try to put something together to show it a bit better.

Ok, that makes sense. I thought you were hitting the split in material pretty fast, but stuffing it behind and using the bottom belt to retain makes sense now.
I found that stuffing my mags behind the PC caused them to fall out when running and getting into my next shooting position.
The old LBE with blouse tucked in worked good for this method, but no joy for my PC. I have an elastic cummerbund now though which might help with retention.
Kinda moot point though now as I've added a dedicated dump pouch to the belt.

I'm thinking hard about adding a piece of elastic on the chest strap, just for this purpose. To make a nice "dumper" behind your rig. That way you can still breathe AND retain mags.

You mean we'll have to react to our surroundings as well as the threat and can't use rote memory to just flop down and deliver rounds? What if it's raining? As always good stuff.

Diz, if you mean as part of your gear you sell, I would consider using shock cord looped a few times like you see on the HSGI suspenders. It's easily replaced by the end user and strong. @ufw, If you stay on the sq range it's rarely an issue. Probably why you don't hear much about it. If it's raining you stay at home... You new to tactical SHTF / TEOTWAKI training ?

I thought the smiley would have properly indicated sarcasm in case the words failed to... I'm fully down with what Hawkeye and Diz espouse.

Yeah that's a thought as well. I like shock cord cuz it's adjustable and replaceable. Sometimes I just say "elastic" as a generic for a stretchable app. But use shock cord whenever possible.
