I purchased a Waffen Werks AK74 about two weeks ago but from what I can tell the headspacing is off. It is way too tight! When attempting to chamber a round, the bolt carrier will pick it up, but gets stuck about half an inch from seating the round. It also takes considerable force to manually eject the round. I can easily drop a round in to the chamber using my fingers, so it is not the chamber. Upon disassembling the rifle, I notice that with a round seated in the bolt. Trying to get the round to chamber and the bolt to lock, the locking lugs are extremely tight. Also the ejector rail has too much friction when contacting the bolt, as the bolt slides past it. I was so exited about my new rifle but now I have to send it back. I ordered it from Classic firearms because I like supporting a Christian based company and have much more confidence that they would make things right if there were a problem. Well talking to classic on the phone, the guy was very nice and apologetic. He promptly sent me a pre paid RML and it is currently on it's way to be fixed. We will see what happens.
I started reading and wow, the Waffen Werks seem to have a lot of rifles with these issues! Anyone else here had similar issues with their WW AK74? It seems like they would really have this fixed by now as it just costs them more money and business. Anyway I'm sure it will turn out fine, but man. First gun in idk how long I buy, and doesn't it figure! Haha
Almost forgot. The gas piston is loose where it is pinned to the bolt carrier, also. Maybe that's not such a big deal but it may be over time. My saiga isn't like that at all.

Hopefully they can get it squared away for you. The only thing I can offer is, if its man made, crap happens. As for the piston being loose, it should have a little wobble in it. It should'nt be excessive, but it shouldn't be rock solid either.

You are right. Anything can fail. Good to know about the gas piston. I have. saiga and it is rock solid so I wasn't sure.

I have an earlier production run WW AK-74, ser. # is under 1000, & the only issue I have with mine, is the gas tube locking lever (I don't recall the proper nomenclature for the part at the moment) is too tight to be manipulated without using a tool for additional leverage. Make sure you have the right optics bracket as well: it needs to have a have a half-circle shape in the center of it, otherwise the locking mechanism of nearly every mount won't engage. I don't know why, but it seems like WW let their quality slip to meet the increasing demand for their AK-74 clones, much to the damage of their brand.

Thanks for the info. I got the rifle back. I could tell what the armorer did was file the back of the locking lugs and that's it. They sent it back to me with the same problem. I have improved the rifle myself by doing a little more filing but I will know if it really matters when I get the chance to shoot it. Not happy about the supposed 7n6 import ban either, which is the main reason I bought the rifle. I should have just gotten a good cheap PSA AR probably. I am just partial to AK's. but right now for the protection of my family and whatever else poses a serious threat, I will have to stock up on the cheapest of whatever I can get my hands on before they ban it all! Sorry that was off topic but I am frustrated to say the least. It's beyond rediculous...... Anyway I will know once I get some more ammo and go shooting.

The current potential issue with 7N6 ammo, is one of a number of reasons that Diz and I switched back to AR's. 5.45 AK's are awesome, but, if importation of mags and ammo (5.45 or 7.62 for that matter) was ever cut via our own govt, or a foreign one such as Russia, AK owners who aren't already neck deep in mags and ammo are going to be in trouble. So I feel your pain in that regards.

Your cleaning kit has a hole designed to manipulate the tab on the gas tube. It's there for a reason. Most of mine usually need a tool to remove as well. Hope this helps.

Ya, I know that, but I've seen people manipulate theirs without having to use the cleaning kit body. If its supposed to be that tight, then great!

Well sorry it took so long but I finally test fired the rifle and it is a jam-o-matic. Long story short I replaced the rifle with a saiga 7.62x39 that has bee professionally converted front and rear. It's on par with an arsenal. Have not shot it yet but will hopefully soon. I traded the jaming waffen werks, a 1929 hex 91/30, and a mossberg 500a1. Got 9 mags with my trade for the new saiga. Four of which are high quality Russian steel mags. New rifle looks and feels great. Has East German furniture. Not my preference so will be putting wood on it after some time but will be spending money on ammo first. I am pretty happy with my trade. Oh and one last deal point was the state trooper I traded with is going to use his LEO discount for me when I can get another shotgun. I suggested that bc it would not cost him anything and would save me about $100 bucks On a normally $300 shotgun.

That sucks, sorry to hear it. At least you didn't completely lose your investment in it.

With adding everything up it was a pretty even trade with all the mags I got. Sucks cause I really like the terminal effects of the 5.45 but hey I finally have a classic 7.62x39 ak. And I don't have to spend any money on mags for a rifle for a while. The surplus 74 mags are like $30 each and that really adds up if you want a good 8-10 mags for your primary rifle. I am pretty happy I can't wait to shoot it!

5.56/.223 is everywhere...
I was thinking about an AK74 from Waffen a few days ago. Thanks for posting this.
I don't know enough about AKs although I would trust Arsenal, Bulgaria, Rifle Dynamics, Krebs, and possibly Snake Hound Machine.
