I am considering the purchase of a semi automatic, RPK-type weapon, for use as a perimeter defense weapon.
I have zero experience with the platform, so I am seeking some advice because I don't know what makes a "good" RPK. All of the ones that I have looked at seem to all feature long, heavier barrels and integral bipods, and I cannot tell the difference between the brands.
Do RPKs accept standard AK furniture, like stocks and grips, or are they specific to the model?
Is the milled receiver preferred over the stamped receiver?
My main stipulation would be that it must feature a receiver side mount, for adding an Aimpoint above the top cover, but other than that, I am open to any suggestions or guidance.

The 100% Romanian surplus ones such as a complete AES-10B was/is the preferred choice. I think those have become pretty scarce though as of late.

Thanks, Hawkeye.
What is your opinion about the ones from Arsenal…worth the price?

All of the ones that I have looked at seem to all feature long, heavier barrels and integral bipods... That's standard fair for the platform. www.royaltigerimports.com/shop.html#!/~/product/category=2251830&id=28008073 These seem pretty good, being factory made from Molot and not parts kits. Just have to deal with them being chambered for 5.56x45mm and thus the price of ammo and AK 5.56 mags. I'd like to take one of these, and hand it over to Definitive Arms so they can do their mag well conversion magic to it. As far as I'm aware, and granted I'm no expert, but I think the only furniture which may be easily interchangeable between RPKs and AKs, is the upper handguard and pistol grip. I've seen others online modify an RPK stock to fit on an AK, so that would suggest to me they do not have a drop-in level of interchangeability. Also, since RPK and Vepr 12 lower handguards are apparently drop-in interchangeable, it may be a difficult job to get an AK lower handguard to fit an RPK. www.russiansurplus.net/product_p/vepr12-poly-lower.htm

Now that is VERY interesting…however, I think I am going to stick with a standard 7.62x39mm.
