this is something i did so i can see when rounds are low, say if there is a lull in the shooting going on, and i want a quick reference... i drilled another sight hole in the mag to show me when it is below 10 rounds...if it is right at 10 rounds then i will be able to tell also... Attachments:

i had one buddy of mine tell me he just uses tracers for his last 2 rounds, which is standard practice for combat loads, but if you cant get tracers, or you are doing a quick mag check (maybe you dumped one early or just want to do a visual) this helps a lot...this will work on any AK mag...20rd, 30rd, 40rd...even polymer mags...just have to measure out the correct distance on each mag, disassemble them completely, pick a drill bit that fits just into the sight hole already there (mine was 3/32), use an automatic hole punch to put a small divot in the sheet metal...drill carefully, deburr, and reassemble...
how do you measure the correct distance? pick 10 rounds from your ammo, stagger them as if they were in the mag and use tape to hold them together exactly how they would sit staggered in the mag...but make sure the rear of the cases are clear...now place the rounds on the outside of the mag to sit roughly where they would if the top round was under the feed lips (you can do this part while the mag is still assembled if you want to put one round in and line your bundled rounds up with that one), mark just inside the rim of where the lowest most round would sit (you have to eyeball this, and then measure off that distance for all the rest of your mags...if you want to get picky you can use calipers like i did and find the distance from the edge of the mag to the center of the existing hole for side to side...just make sure after you measure top to bottom, to write it down or mark your tape measure or cardstock or whatever you are using to measure...then disassemble completely, and follow the recommendations for drilling above...it was less than a 10 min job on a drill press or even with a hand drill...for all 6 mags
