I didn't realize they had them for the vz.58. I can definitely see how something heavier than a microdot being on the handguard would be bad for balance. I am a fan of small optics, so I never much thought about it. Plus, coming from an AK having a side rail, I always had that option. Yeah, I like small optics too, low weight is great. After working with the vz I've come to appreciate some of its nuances, one of which is that it is lighter than the stamped ak's in the receiver. This, along with the aluminum mags, has the effect of shifting the balance point a little further forward(less than you would imagine since the bolt is shorter than the ak's). Nothing drastic, almost unnoticable in the stock config, but combined with a collapsible AR stock(aluminum tube and mount with CTR) that i think is lighter than the bakelite fixed stock, it's a little further forward still. It s evolution is a process. That long rambling all leads up to me somewhat rabidly wanting a cowitnessing side mount to get that balance point closer to me again without just putting a heavier stock on(which I did with a Magpul ACS, better balance, but a more weight than I wanted)

This is also a nice monting solution: It´s purpose built for OKO Red dot sight made in Czech republic. Nice feauture is, that it can be quickly detached and replaced with standard upper handguard in case of failure.

I've heard great there are on the horizon for vz optic mounting from you.
I hope that 7.62 pistol has an sbr form in its future.

About to pop on buying a VZ58; a VZ2008 to be exact. Can anyone give me their current 2 cents on why or why not?
Ideally it'll be an extra SHTF Back up rifle. Going to be hard to beat a rifle for $387 and 700rds for $179.
----
@ Diz or Hawk, Any idea if the VZ58 mags will fit inside a AK 7.62 MK.III?
*Edit* Found the answer to that question in earlier topic. Answer is, Yes.

I've got a VZ2008 and I have been impressed with it. Probably a better design then the AK....but still decades behind the AR platform. I "restored" mine back to it's 60's issued state. I refinished it back with the correct dark grey color, and added an original sling/bayonet, etc. Here's a few older videos where we were able to run it in an AK Class at Tiger Valley:

I decided to order one. One thing that has been popping up in some discussions is the "gremlin" problem. Some vz2008s have it some don't, but the way to fix the problem is to have a tab welded onto the BCG. I have a guy lined up to do just that for $55.

@ waffenmachtVery nice looking rifle. Gotta love the nickname they have for the furniture "Beaver Barf." Have you had any "gremlin" issues with you CAI VZ? Basically the striker not being caught by the sear and following the carrier home, leaving the rifle uncocked. If you have an earlier model from CAI, there is a chance that your BCG is tabbed. But due to a lawsuit with another company, they are no longer tabbing their BCGs. I'll be sure to show some pictures whenever PSA ships my rifle. I'll also give details about my process of getting the BCG tabbed by a third-party.

It hasn't been fired in a couple of years. My carrier is tabbed.

First Impression is that I really like this rifle. Being a lefty, i'm very surprised how left hand friendly this Vz.2008 is. I'm going to be sending the BCG to a 3rd party to get it tabbed. I will post some pictures of what it looks like before the tabbing and after. A few things I dont like right out of the box: 1. The folding stocks collapse button is very stiff but that seems to be common. A little TLC and Hoppes will do the trick. 2. The muzzle break is an AK 4:30 position break. With a vz, you need a 6:00 position break. A lot of after market options out there,

Century may have changed this.... mine is an earlier example. Just be sure to double check (or double Czech) before you spend $$$ on a brake that may not fit.
