The first standing order of Rogers Rangers, 1759.
The very first book I want to review here on this website is: SH 21-76, the Ranger Handbook. Ho-up. For those of you without any military background, this is the bible for small unit tactics. If you are not familiar with it, I highly suggest you fix that. No discussion of small unit tactics is complete without it. Two of the first things you need to be familiar with are the Troop Leading procedures (TLP), and the Operations Order (OPORD). Think of them as a foundation to build your tactical house on. I learned them in slightly different format but I will use the latest (2006) version of the handbook in all subsequent discussions.
Although the whole book is tailored to the Ranger Batt, once you take out what doesn't apply to you, there is much to be learned about basic organization, movement, patrolling procedures, Immediate Action (IA) or Battle Drills, and Actions on the Objective.
Be forewarned, it is in outline form, and very acronym heavy. Don't sweat it, just become very familiar with all the terminology. Later on it will all start making sense to you as you practice it.

Link did not work for me, but the latest version I have is SH 21-76, July 2006. I will be at Bragg next month and will check for any later revision but I think this is the latest. It has a line drawing of a ranger with a M-4, from the waist up, on the cover. Get the smaller format for carrying in the field. Mine is 5" x 7".

I still carry a copy of the Ranger handbook in my go-bag that a Ranger friend gave to me 20 years ago. I've changed zip-lock bags that it rides in a couple of times but it's the same one from that long ago and I try to live by those standing orders and drill those principles into my boys heads opportunities present themselves ... a great read with great info!

In the link above, it has correct spacing. But for some reason when you click on it, it eliminates the spaces in the url and it no longer is valid. So, if you click on it , then up in the address bar go in and put a space between the last few words starting with 2011, it should look like this: "/2011 RHB Final Revised 02-11-2011.pdf" after "http://www.benning.army.mil/infantry/rtb/content/PDF" see the spaces after 2011, and RHB and etc.? those need to be put back in the url No idea why it just doesn't work when clicking. Try that and let me know if it works, please. Try cutting and pasting this: www.benning.army.mil/infantry/rtb/content/PDF/2011 RHB Final Revised 02-11-2011.pdf

Dang.
If I cut and paste that last line, it comes up and downloads automatically for me.
Trust me, it exists. Try googling ranger handbook 2011. It was the first result for me.
Also I have links to other resources, some online books. Can we do a thread and compile those?

Is there a file upload site we could post PDFs to as a central resource? I have the Ranger manual and ... uh ... some others that I could upload. Diz, would you mind posting some page numbers for us to look up? Thanks. I did a search for TLS and OpOrd and got good stuff but I want to ensure I am reading what you're referring to...

As for the RHB, 2-1 is Troop Leading Procedures (Page 23 in pdf) 2-10 is Operation Orders (Page 32 in pdf) Chapter 6 (Movement, starts on page 101), Chapter 7 (Patrolling, starts on page 113) and Chapter 8 (Battle Drills, starts on page 139) are all excellent.
