Okay, so in my class I speak/teach about different antibiotics and meds. This is a 1-2+ hour class and just goes over the basics. So as promised, this is my list of Rx and OTC meds. Just like most things this is just an opinion of one old guy who has done medicine for just shy of 50 years and has been in the 'preparedness' circle since 1999.
Doxycycline -Covers wide range of problems…Anthrax, Lyme, Respiratory, STD’s, Cholera
Ciprofloxacin or Cephalexin -covers skin, urinary and respiratory
Metronidazole -Anaerobic bacteria, protozoal infections, bacterial vaginosis, intra-abdominal infections
Clindamycin -serious bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue, pelvis, and abdomen, some bone and joint infections
Ketoconazole -Fungal infections of the skin, hair and mucous membranes, Persistent fungal infections of the vagina, fungal infections of the mouth, throat and stomach, intestines or other internal organs
Augmentin -Lower Respiratory Tract Infections,Otitis Media, Sinusitis, Skin and Skin Structure Infections, Urinary Tract Infections
Azithromycin -mild to moderate skin infections; upper and lower respiratory tract infections, including pharyngitis (strep throat), tonsillitis, sinus infections, pneumonia; sexually transmitted infections of the cervix or urinary tract and genital ulcer disease in men.
Bactrim DS -Sulfa-based drug sometimes an alternative for people allergic to PCN
Amoxicillin -another form of PCN
Ivermectin -parasites and several virus's ... yup
OTC meds
Cough and cold meds
Tylenol
Advil
Naprosyn/Alleve
Allegra, Benadryl, Zyrtec or other antihistamine. Let's talk about this one. You have someone with allergies at you LP/OP on the night shift, who is sneezing. Which antihistamine do you give? Benadryl or Allegra? Think about it and comment.
Flonase
anti-diarrheal -this is important
stool softener -ever been constipated? Not fun!
Creams/Lotions and ointments:
Sunscreen
Bug spray/lotion
Hydrocortisone 1%
moisturizing lotions (non-fragrance)
anti-fungal creams
first aid creams...I prefer Polysporin but there is Neosporin and bacitracin. Neomycin, which is the main ingredient in Neosporin was the allergen of the year a few years back, and I have seen many people that used it for years and developed an allergy to it. That is why I prefer Polysporin or bacitracin, not Neosporin or triple antibiotic cream (generic to Neosporin)
So, just a few simple thoughts. Hope this helps.
