If you've taken a class with me, then you've heard this story. What is your motivation? I've been asked, "Why do I need to bring a digital pic of a loved one to class?" Many years ago, when I first started taking formal training classes, I used to tape a picture of my motivation to the inside of an ammo can. Every time I would walk back to load mags, I saw their faces. It was a reminder for me that I was on the right path. I wanted to remind myself why I was spending all this money on classes, why I was driving hours away from home, renting hotel rooms, and spending money on ammo, food, etc. It was to protect my home and my family. I have no say when I check out, but I do have a say in getting myself as ready as possible if a threat presents itself. I don't live in a world of normalcy bias, assuming that because something has never happened before, it won't happen in the future. If the worst happens, I will be as ready as I possibly can. I want you to remember why you're there, training, on your own dime and time. To have a reminder of what's important: family, wife, husband, kids, pets, etc., whatever it is. Then, use it as your motivator during class and for your discipline to stay focused when you get home. To be ready. Knowing you put the time in to better defend your family and loved ones. To not call, hope for or depend on a stranger to protect what is — and what will always be — your responsibility.
