Start teaching him early - not just values and how to think for himself but, practical skills. He will thank you later.

As much respect as I have for my father now, he wasn't around. My son will be taught the lessons that I had to learn with no assistance, which was usually more painful

He'll still have his own lessons to learn - some things have to be experienced to be fully understood - but, you're off to a good start!
