In Boy Scouts this was taught as a way of developing cognitive skills and patience in addition to being obviously practical knowledge. Two, two foot long pieces of 550 cord of differing colors were used. Knots are still taught in SF and Recondo schools in the US Army. This link has the major ones listed, their purpose, and relevant YouTube vids embedded. www.survivaldispatch.com/14-essential-survival-knots/

Knots are useful for all sorts of stuff. I was an Engineer and you could use them to construction all sorts of stuff, secure boats, create makeshift tools and a whole raft (hah! another thing you can make! pun intended.) of other uses. Secure ways of tying gear to your ruck with a quick release knot which can't be pulled without releasing a tab etc... Fantastic skill to have.
