Read this, off've the MDT site; brushbeater.wordpress.com/2016/11/17/field-phones-community-networking-and-thinking-in-three-dimensions/Some really accurate points, especially the 'use a variety of things' and the low signature and totally valid use of field phones. This sparked my memory, and whilst this might not be for everyone, it's certainly something that might interest some, especially given it was designed for poor villages where mains power/battery access is minimal, and for things like disaster releif so you can set up a small scale telephone exchange either over Cat5 or wirelessly. Go have a look. It is not remotely tactical, but it IS functional, and you could entirely fit this stuff in IP68 boxes and leave them there till you needed to cable it in for... whatever reason. Floods, war, bad weather... you name it, this could work nicely for local 'village' comms. Just a thought. villagetelco.org/mesh-potato/
