Just out of curiosity what is the purpose of the inserts?

To basically ditch the bungees on the pouches allowing you to just yank the magazine out; while still having enough retention so that mags don't come out while running, jumping, going upside down (it can happen). Also to allow easier reinsertion of the mags to retain your mags without using a dump pouch.

I have used the Esstac 556 KYWI with Gen 2 Magpuls in an older Esstac pouch. They work as intended and held the mags securely during a four day patrol class. It was nice to be able to ditch the bungees. You will almost definitely need velcro inside the pouch body though I have not tried without.

I use a couple Fast-Mags on occasion. Same principle. It works, but I prefer the security of flap pouches. Bungees suck, imo.

Why doesn't anyone make a pouch with a flap which can be tucked away with a kydex(or whichever kind of plastic) insert? Best of both, if you ask me. Run them all with the flaps tucked, just one tucked for quick reloads and the rest with the flap over the mag for max retention, or run them all untucked, if there is an inclement shit-storm.

Ordered one of the Pantel Tactical mag inserts, just one for now so I can test and won't be out much money if it doesn't work. I ordered the Pantel Tactical inserts because they specifically mentioned working with Tactical Tailor single pouches, will try to post a review after I get it. My reasoning for not doing flapped pouches is that my chest rig is an APC2, using four open top pouches with a TQ pouch and a thin med pouch mounted in the center, may add other admin pouches later. If I did flapped pouches I'd have to use double mag pouches and I just like the single pouches better for myself.
Omnivorous, have you asked Hawkeye about trying something like that?

Omnivorous, have you asked Hawkeye about trying something like that? I try not to pester him with my random gear ideas via PM, any more than I do already.

Oh I feel ya there, although it has been a while since I've bugged him, hmmm..... Just thought since he'd put out the open top kydex pouches in the past and with the standard UW pouches, it probably wouldn't be that hard for him to whip up.

So I've gotten my Pantel Tactical insert in, no problems with ordering from them but they only had two more inserts in stock last I checked, seems like they don't restock them very often. Forgot to take a picture of them when unboxing, here's the one from their site: Insert went in easy on my Tactical Tailor shingle pouch, I haven't done any mods to this pouch whatsoever so there is no velcro lining or anything special on this. Insert stays in place very well, but trying to take the mag out was like pulling up roots, my entire chest rig was coming up with it. So I spent the morning modifying it to change it to this: Took and made one side almost flat, made the other side's angle not as sharp. Now the mag comes out easily (faster works better) and the rig doesn't ride up with it. Insert still stays in place, reinserting mags isn't difficult at all. Here is the insert inside the pouch with a mag: Passes the upside down and shake test. Mag does slide out of the pouch a little during the shake test, but it doesn't fall out of the pouch. Modification probably took me between 30 minutes and an hour, heating up the kydex then adjusting the angle and checking for fit. To be honest, I'll probably just get some kydex and make my own for the rest of my chest rig because of the modification I had to do to it any ways and the inserts not being well stocked. I may add velcro to the insides of my pouches just for peace of mind to keep the inserts in there. I do not know how it will fit other mags as I only have ARs.

I noticed on my Strike Hard Gear AK mag shingles have a strip of PALS webbing stiched to the back of the inside of the individual pouches, as if they're designed to take the HSP mag insert. I'll probably get a set of the HSP inserts, & see how well they work.
