So just wanted to give you folks an update how the UW Gear family weathered the storm. Hawkeye is currently without power since late last night (So that means the sewing machines are not working )
Everyone did fine. We live about 10 miles away from Hawkeye and did not lose power and just had some tree branches down in the yard. Overall this storm could have been worse but both Hawkeye and I have had our preps and after action plans in place for a while so this storm was ultimately quite boring and did not live up to the hype that the news was making it out.
However it could have been worse and I was expecting the aftermath to be worse based on Hawkeye's stories of post Andrew and my experiances in Orlando with post Charlie/Frances/Jeanine.
One thing that stuck in my mind was the mandatory evacuations from the beach. I always feel that if you can it is prudent to evacuate but it is up to you if you want to risk your life and property. I have never been a fan of enforced evacuations. Today the mayors and police chiefs have been scolding those that did not evacuate. Before the storm they kept telling folks that once they hit a certain point and you do not evacuate they will not help you if you need it to try and scare folks to leave. Again this is prudent on their part as I do not expect police and fire to be foolish when they do not have to be.
But here is the point. Once again it is proven that police, fire and other services that you pay taxes for are under no obligation to protect you. You are your own first responder. Disaster does not always come in the form of the terrorist or stock market crash, sometimes it is a storm, flood or fire. It is up to you and your family to prepare and be ready. Can you prepare for everything that could happen? No, but you can be prepared for a wide variety of things to the point that if something happens that falls outside your prep you can adjust and handle it better than someone that just prepared for one event or not at all.
So this was a good practice run for the Spinebuster family. My wife and I are already talking about what we need and what we don't need for the next time, because there is going to be a next time. There is always a next time.
