Any have experience with pistols chambered in 9mm Makarov? Thinking about upgrading from my current carry pistol but don't a lot of spare cash and I've watched some reviews that show utter reliability from Makarovs and P-64s. Thinking about picking up a P-64, seeing them online for around $230 or so. Before it's mentioned, looked around for Cz82s and didn't see any in my searches. I am a southpaw, but would plan on carrying safety off with hammer not cocked in my holster. Would plan on doing the spring upgrade for the trigger pull on P-64.

I have a CZ82, and used it as my first semi auto CCW until I could upgrade to a G23/19. Since that time, there are more makers of the 9mm Mak round. I have my case of ammo stored for this weapon, so won't be buying more. From what I have seen, the 9mm Mak is essentially close to the 380 ballistically. Now sure how the newer personal protection rounds compare today. The CZ 82 is very simple to field strip.

What are you upgrading from?
Makarovs are fun but the mag release is a killer for me as a serious use hand gun. That and a lack of availability of good carry holsters.
With M&P Shields running less than $400 I think you'd be better off saving.

I currently carry a Ruger SR22 It's utterly reliable for me because I carry good ammunition and not the lead crap that most people feed their 22lr guns, but I'm concerned with reliability in inclement weather and want a little more circumference to my round in terms of ballistics.

Hey making the effort to carry is 90% of the battle. Rock the Ruger until you can truly upgrade. I have seen SR9s and SR9Cs for as low as $300. Palmetto has M&Ps for $329 with free shipping this weekend. palmettostatearmory.com/catalog/product/view/id/15082Various police trade in Glocks are running $300 to $350 in good to excellent condition. By the time you buy a holster and good carry ammunition the difference in price between that mak and a more mainstream and modern handgun will be negligible, and you will have a much more capable platform.

I love my Bulgarian PM. It has never had a malfunction of any kind. It shoots beautifully. I also had a p64 for about 1 week. It is nice and small, but it's double action literally takes 2 fingers to pull (25+ lbs) and it narrow grip really hurts your palm when firing. It's the least pleasant gun I have ever fired. It makes LCPs and j frames seem very comfortable in comparison. YMMV.
I do agree that an economy line 9mm from the big names would offer you better stopping power. Ruger makes the 9E, Smith the SD9VE etc.

One note, I carry in an AlienGear Cloak Tuck 3.0, shells are easy to swap and are $15 or so. So the cost of new holsters for daily concealed carry is under $40 if I buy a new pocket holster as well. I am leaning more to the S&W Shield based on comments here and elsewhere, I guess switching to a 9mm Makarov doesn't entirely make sense also because I'd be the ONLY one in the family to have a pistol chambered in it. Roommate has a 9x19, dad's got a 9x19, ect.

agree with others get the 9x19. I used it as an "in between" until I could get the Glock. Nowadays with the M&P Shield for sub $350, save and get that.

In the mid/late 80s I carried an East German Makarov as a hot weather firearm for a few years. Read that as a compact carry firearm wearing shorts and T-shirt or tank top, etc. I had no formal handgun training at that time so if it were today I wouldnt carry it for self defense today unless it was all that was at hand. I believe I eventually found a fobus holster (I think thats what it was) for it, but no longer have it to be sure. My main cary pistol at the time was a surplus Hi-Power with 13 rounds of high capacity woo-hooo. I was bill Bob badass, as most of my friends carried government models of one variation or another.
Like my first firearm instructor told me, Dont use anything less then a 9MM/.38 for self defense unless its all you have available at the time or all that you can afford. But save and try to obtain at least those calibers. I have carried aan NAA .22mag mini revolver as a back up to the backup...
Also The Makarov is a heavy weapon for CCW and most people wont carry when its "uncomfortable" But Im a wuss now in my old age... been carrying around tupperware for too any years now to go back to 1911s, Hi-Powers or even the Mak...LOL Luv me some comfort.

I agree with what others have said. I too am spoiled with "tupperware" guns. The Makarov is a great gun for what it is...A carry gun it is not. There are just better options for the same money once you factor in support gear.
