Spot on with the Kabar Becker reviews. Very hard to beat the BK9 as a one knife solution for survival and camp tasks. Like you though mine doesn't get used nearly as much as my smaller Becker, a BK24. It rides on my hip next to my leatherman and the BK9 stays in the truck. A 3 to 5 inch utility knife just does so much for such little encuumbrance.

I'm also a fan of Becker Knives. I particularly like the BK16 as an all around not too big, not too small, utility knife. One issue I had with it was the grittiness of the factory coating they put on it. It was a bit more gritty than the ESEE coatings. I modified it by using some stripper to remove the factory coating and then used vinegar and lemon juice to form a patina on the entire blade (after removing the scales of course). It turned out pretty well. Where as the factory coating caused extra 'friction', the patina is pure smooth metal and the knife cuts much better when going through material now. After removing the coating I found I was able to use the back of the blade to strike a fire steel as well, where as with the coating on, it didn't work for me.The patina prevents rust/corrosion just as well as the factory coating so far. It is 1095, so you need to take care of it. Anyway I thought I'd pass it on. If you do not like the factory sheath for the BK16 and want to upgrade, I can recommend the Spec Ops Brand Combat Master Knife Sheath Mini. www.specopsbrand.com/knife-sheaths/combat-master-mini.htmlI found it for like $40 shipped on Amazon. You might be able to find it cheaper on eBay. Anyway, that went a long way in saying that I like Becker Knives as well. Take care, K

I've got the BK7. It's old. Aka when Becker knife tool made them. Lil big..but it works. Sheath socks balls..but back then...kydex or plastic Sheaths weren't to common on sub 70$ knives.

Hawkeye, looking at some of the schrade knives for a horizontal carry knife. Would you recommend that smaller schrade for this? This would be carried cross draw next to my belt buckle. Reason for considering this carry is it makes more room in my pockets and let's me move my EDC flashlight to my weak side pocket where my pocket knife currently is. Also going to southern Illinois in September where I can't carry my pistol yet, but a knife with a blade no bigger than 3" is okay to conceal.

Yes, I really like that SCHF16. It should work fine for a role like that. You'd just have to rig up a way to mount it on your belt.

What do you guys think about the ESEE Izula? www.amazon.com/dp/B001OEJUU2/ref=twister_B019Y76JNG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1Been rocking a CRKT Minimalist Bowie for a couple of months, mostly picked that one because I was going to visit family in IL and it was all I could carry there. Now looking for something a little bigger but hopefully American made and not >$75. This would be my EDC knife but would also have an extra sheath to go on the battle belt that sits on the nightstand at night.

Carrying such a blade horizontally at the appendix position is a pretty slick daily option. I'd spend the money on aftermarket scales, though. ESEE and Becker knives are the best you can probably get at that price point.

If you wear large-sized gloves, I'd recommend the Izula 2, since it has a slightly longer handle than the Izula. On carraige & deployment, I think a vertical orientation and a draw into a reversed grip is more intuitive, than from a horizontal orientation.
