I am starting this thread because there hasn't been a lot going on lately around here and I love hearing what people prefer and why. I know this topic has been discussed to death on other forums, but perhaps not here. I have both and like both. I used to be all G3 (PTR91 in truth), but I recently acquired a full size FAL after having been without one for about 10 years. I love the looks of my PTR but it kicks like hell. That said, it is super reliable and far more accurate than me. The FAL handles great and has an incredible pedigree.
What are your experiences, preferences, tips on these rifles? I realize neither is better, I just want to get some interesting discussion going. Thanks.

If you ask any Englishman who's ever seen one, that is more than 10 years my senior they would cordially disagree, and tell you that the SLR (FAL to you chaps) is THE single best rifle in the world and the right hand of freedom in it's time. All I know is a semi-auto FAL can be made to fire full auto with a simple matchstick upgrade. The only issue is you don't get to STOP pulling the trigger till the magazine is empty, if you consider that an issue Not sure if the G3 will let you do that. And I know for a fact that the OLD shooting standard required you to be able to engage targets (and hit!) at 1000m with the SLR and a 4x optic. I don't know about OUTSIDE the commonwealth, but certainly inside it it was considered accurate enough for that task, and no one I've heard of complained of half the issues the M16 had, or the SA80 had etc.

I lean towards a FAL only because I own that one and not the other.

I've owned both. When comparing quality manufactures of each, the FAL wins in almost every category. Recoil is better, gas adjustment is better, service/maintenance is better, trigger is better, sights (depending on which model) are better, bolt-hold-open feature is better.
The only area that I think the G3 has the edge is in cost of magazines (which here in the States is almost free). The G3 might be a little lighter and might be bought for slightly cheaper.

For the PTR91, get the recoil reducing heavy buffer and an HK21 butt pad (both are usually available at RTG Parts), I have both on my PTR91A3R and they really reduce the recoil. I also have a Bill Springfield Recoil Reducing Buffer for an A3 Retractable stock (no longer a meat tenderizer) on my PTR91 GI (my truck gun). I got enough spare parts to almost build another rifle or two, along with about 40-50 magazines.

I have always loved the G3. I currently own a PTR-91 with the wood furniture. Not a fan of the Navy lower so it was replaced with a G3 metal lower. Recoil is not as bad as everyone leads you to believe. It is unbelievably accurate for what it is. I will admit that my Springfield M1A is a great firearm but when I want to go have some fun out in the back pasture, the 91 gets thrown in the truck. I have shot an FAL. It might be the right arm of the free world just didn't thrill me at all.

CETME (PTR-91/G-3s grand daddy) and FAL owner here. FAL hands down. Being redundant but ergonomics better, recoil better, gas adjustment ability. Accessories etc. and so forth. I just love shooting my FALs my CETME i like but not near as much as the FAL.

G3 all the way. Accuracy, reliability, looks, the ability to have button and or paddle mag release. I also dont find the recoil to be as harsh as people make it out to be. CHEAP MAGS. I just purchased 24 German excellent condition G3 mags for $1.54 a piece. Yes, $1.54

PTR91 GI RStill debating on red dot of some sort of a 1-6x. I really think for a 308, go for the 1-6x. I have a PA 1-4x on my AR and it's pretty awesome, the 1x works exactly like a red dot, with the disadvantage I see being weight and size with a scope instead of a red dot.
