One thing I worry about is wearing such supportive boots EDC might cause the legs to be weaker. Great to have over rough ground, but EDC I would think it better to have less support so your muscles are doing their normal job and getting stronger.
Is that a valid concern?

Totally valid. Something I've noticed recently is how weak my ankles are; I've started climbing a lot, and there is little/no support in climbing shoes. My hiking boots are proper all terrain things that weigh a tonne but are going to save my ankle pretty much no matter what. I've got a LOT more ankle strength recently, just by not using those super protective ones.

I might rebuild them anyway. Reason being is that full boots are a pain to lace up and down when coming in and out of the house so i would likely wear sneakers or slip-ons around the house until going to town or in the Winter it's slosh boots anyway. Now I tend to wear quality hikers ALL the time and feel I may have been hurting myself more than helping by doing that for the past 5 years. I know once the White's are broke-in they are like a glove and can't be beat for support, but they are heavy. I hate to see them sitting all wornout though knowing what a good pair of SHTF boots they would make. OK, talked myself into it.

Yeah you got valid points both ways. I want my boots broken in and my feet used to them, however, I want to make sure they're in good shape if I ever really need them. So I frequently switch out from wearing boots to just lighter footwear. I also rotate my boots, so they all get a little wear but not worn out. I would say 2 pairs at a minimum. I currently have 4 pair, plus 2 pair for the wife. I usually rotate 2 pair, with another 2 pair as back up.
I just really like the solid feeling of having really good boots on my feet. It's like you have this really solid foundation, which just sets the mood for the day's coming festivities. That plus working in factories for 20+ years where it's a good idea.
You can work out to strengthen the ankles but it's a joint not a muscle so if you tweak it, you tweak it. Better to have ankle support when you need it. This was the rallying cry of the ultra-light crowd when they wanted to justify wearing sneaker cousins on the trail instead of trad boots. We need to strengthen our ankles. But it turned out they just injured ankles anyway, so mute point.

On my 6th season and second pair of Lowa Renegade GTX Mid Hiking Boots in Sepia. $155 on sale at REI - Why I went back for pair two after 3 months hard use on pair one. >600 miles with a pack on pair one. about 275 miles was leak free. After that I wear gators. Very light weight - got support with my 200# plus 40-50# pack and gear, I have wide feet. They build wide. Not made in China (Romania I think). Gortex is mixed blessing. Great when new. sucks when wet mid third season, when they leak at the tongue. Like walking in two water filled plastic shopping bags, when you wade a steam with boots on. I try to avoid that. When they begin to leak then I wear the gators.

Doing my part in this thread. Danner has a site called Hit the Breakroom. They offer "factory seconds" and other boots at drastically discounted prices. I got a pair of 6" Melee boots for $55.00. They're the most comfortable shoes I own. The Vibram soles rock. I highly suggest giving it a try. Oh, free shipping and returns rocks too! www.hitthebreakroom.com/

Yeah, I've used them before. Good return policy as I had to return mine due to a size issue. When I went to order a different size they were out of my size. You have to be ready to order as they have limited sizes and limited quanities. Can get great deals if you are quick though.

Just ordered a pair of Rockies C4Ts, will give my opinion after I break them in. Needed a new pair as my S2Vs (SV2s? Can't remember....) are finally starting to go after like 6 years. Probably would have lasted longer if I rotated them like you're supposed to. Oh well, time to break out the Shoe Goo.

No go on the C4Ts. Wear a size 9 wide with my other pair of Rocky's, tried a size 9.5 and 10, neither work. They are really tight wear the tongue is stitched in, stitching is actually cutting in on the area behind my toes, wore them for a couple of hours but had to take them off because I was worried about circulation.

good news! they recalled every one of the coyote versions because the army said they "werent the right color" so a darker coyote version will be availble again this summer. they run slightly wide, and about true to length.
now, they do require a good break in for people to fall in love with them, based on my conversations with other folks, but once you get a few heavy rucks in on them you'll never want to wear anything else.
