As of 02/28/2014 the ammunition market here in the US has began to stabilize and return to a somewhat normal availability and price range. Most local shops still have almost no rimfire ammo in stock and if your looking for a not so mainstream caliber like 6.5 Grendel good luck finding it, but on the other hand supplies of various 5.56, 7.62X39, 9mm, and 40S&W ammo have made their way back on the shelf. Even though local shops are getting ammo back in stock a lot of them are still pretty pricy. Online sellers on the other hand have more availability and their prices are much lower and some even at pre December 2012 prices. So my question to everyone is, what are prices and availability like your way and have you found any excellent deals on ammo recently?

I tend to buy online, mostly, because I can shop and get exactly what I am looking for.
Local stores are having much more available.
The brands are a mixed bag, but and the shelves are full of bulk 12 gauge, 5.56x45, 7.62x51, 7.62x39, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP . Unfortunately, the shops still are still trying to charge far too much for it, which is probably why the shelves are still full of it. I am holding out for them to wise up, and lower their prices.
Bulk 9x19 and .22LR are still hard/impossible for me to find. I can easily get carry/duty 9mm but nothing in ball to train with, so I am limiting my live fire in 9mm, so that I do not deplete too much of my stash.

Since Sandy Hook, I had not seen one box of non-snake shot .22lr on store shelves anywhere. Until a couple weeks ago. .22lr is finally starting to trickle in. 9mm is spotty and expensive. 45acp is same, but more expensive.
.223/5,56 mm has been available for months at incredibly inflated prices. Maybe it's coming doown, I don't know- AIM Surplus has some Danish M855 for what I'd consider a decent deal by today's standards.
.308, same. If you can find it at 50 cents/rd for quality manufacturers, that's a buy.
If you are in need of ammo, and it's available... I would not hesitate to buy it and forget about the price paid. These may well be considered the Good Old Days someday.
"Bite the bullet" has taken on an exquisitely ironic double meaning these days.

Yeager seems to think that 7.62 and 5.45 are going to dry up due to events in the Ukraine. Seems to be pretty available online, haven't gotten around to checking the local shops yet..

There's plenty of over priced .40 S&W, 5.56, 7.62x39, and .45ACP here in Toledo, Ohio. I still buy online since the prices are much more reasonable than the local gun shops.

Ya, as much as I'd like to buy locally, but if I'm going to be making any kind of large ammo purchase, like a case sized amount or up, I'm going online. I only usually buy locally, if its for defensive ammo, because I don't really need 500-1000 rounds of that stuff. What are ya'll's favorite online ammo web-searching bot? I like gun-deals.com.

5.56 X 45 seems to be trending back down toward regular prices.
At the onset of the 2013 ban panic, I saw the prices go from $0.25 per round to over $1.00 per round overnight. Then it stayed at approximately $0.75 per round for a long while before eventually dropping to $0.50 per round.
In the past few months, it has been dipping below $0.40 per round
Just yesterday, I picked up about 540 rounds of Federal XM193 on stripper clips (nice, because I don't have to do it myself) for only $0.37 per round.
I have been able to afford to train a bit more, this past year, and I am even getting my inventories back up to a comfortable level.
I hope that this supply/demand equilibrium continues to balance out.

Bump for a timely subject as prices are trending every lower (for now as long as we dont sanction Russia in Ammo)

With 223 ammo finally getting back down to $0.22 per round (08/07/14)I would say things are getting back to normal. My biggest concern is the import restrictions on Kalashnikov concern and the possible banning of Russian made ammo. Now I know a lot of other affordable ammo comes out of Ukraine (Wolf ammo) but it will definitely knock a dent in the US civilian supply.

Yes and not just affect the prices for steel case but the removal of a huge source of affordable ammo will dirve up the price of brass ammo as well.
Luckily we are now in a phase of very high ammo production both domestically and internationally
