For CCW -- 1 spare
For "battle rattle" 3. 1 on same side of pistol, 2 on the other side.

For me, it depends.... CHL carry, I have one 17 rounder in the weapon, and sometimes carry an extra in my pocket. In the winter I may even carry an extra in a mag pouch, depending on how I am dressed. Battle Rattle, I have one 20 rounder in the weapon and two more in pouches (that's IF I am carrying a handgun, I try not to if at all possible)

In the past I have carried either one or two spare mags, in separate single mag pouches. This allows me to tailor the load out to the "mission" or threat level. That being said, I prefer to carry two spare mags, which tends to off-set the weight of a loaded G-19 on the other side.
I like Comp-tec holsters and individual mag pouches. I've carried these daily, for over 10 years. With just about any loose-fitting shirt I haven't had any real issues printing and so forth.
EDC is a very personal issue. You have to use what works for you. Sometimes having a knife, light, and cell phone can be just as important. You have to combine all this stuff into a carry package. Having another mag or two is a PITA but may be a very good idea.
When traveling I usually have another 4-6 spare mags in a "range" bag, along with other assorted goodies.
On my battlebelt, I run a 3-mag pouch. Along with maybe 3 more in the assault pack.
All my spare mags are G-17.

I often don't carry a spare at all, and only have 7 in the pocket 9mm. but my load is 45 grs at 2200 fps, a segmented bullet that breaks in half (lengthwise) at impact and I'm a proven world level A class competitor at combat handgun matches. I don't kid myself about needing (or being able) to handle more than a couple of guys at 10 ft, or more than one at 5 yds.

I don't change anything about the pistol for "major blowout". I take the rifle instead.

if you pocket ccw, the place for your spare mag is on your ankle. On the outside of your weak side leg.

if you pocket ccw, the place for your spare mag is on your ankle. On the outside of your weak side leg. Why? Surely it depends on which pocket you CCW, what sort of clothes you wear (because of different numbers of pockets, pocket placement..) and situation. I know I for one, although I don't have a handgun (not legal here without a reason, and there are very few people who can justify it...) I usually have enough pockets and where I carry my phone/keys tends to be lower down (thigh pockets) and I don't use my hip pockets. That'd be the ideal place for me. I know a friend of mine who carries it all in his arse pockets, because he's usually wearing a long coat that conceals it well, but that sweeps back out of the way like he was going for a belt, and (mostly because he's a fucking UNIT) he can carry 2 mags spare that way. (Though I must admit he doesn't have any sort of BOK, which is out of ignorance, rather than arrogance...)

I am from the school of your gun is only as good as its feeding device. If my magazine doesn't work for some reason, I have a spare. If my magazine runs dry, I have a spare. I am also a believer that if I know I am going to the fight, then take a shoulder weapon. For daily carry around the city, a shoulder weapon sticks out and draws unwanted attention, so I CCW a handgun. So for daily carry I am relying on a handgun as my primary firearm, so it is pretty important that my handgun and magazine works. If I am carrying a shoulder weapon, and have to go to a handgun, then it is pretty important that my handgun and magazine works.
It is also known that handguns are poor fight stoppers, as the terminal ballistic performance of a handgun round is not as good as a rifle or shotgun round, so knowing that if I have to shoot a bad guy then it may take multiple rounds. In todays world there seems to be a lot of incidents involving multiple bad guys, so having extra ammo is a plus if necessary. I am also from the school of better to have it and not need it, then the other way around. I carry a Glock 17 and 2 spare mags for CCW. On my battle belt I carry a Glock 17, 34, or 21 and 3 spare mags. On my plate carrier I also carry 2 additional spare mags. I also keep a few spare mags in my vehicles. For ammo I prefer the Federal HST 147gr 9mm, and 230gr 45acp.

I favor an ankle pouch, if I bother with a spare mag at all. I normally pocket carry. it aches my butt to have a wallet in a hip pocket, much less anything else. nor am I going to risk deforming the mag lips by sitting on them. if all you have is a pocket gun, you'll be lucky to survive firing it, (having to do so) much less clearing malfunctions or reloading.

Thread necro, I know. Just wanted to add my $0.02 for anybody else looking for magazine carry solutions. I carry two spare mags in a tactical tailor "magna mag" pouch at about the 4 o'clock position (left handed). I don't have the flaps over it, been doing this setup for a couple of weeks and the magnets have held the mags perfectly. I carry two because I find two to be the perfect number in terms of comfort and peace of mind for me. If crap is messed up enough that I am geared up, it's the two mag pouch and UW Gear bandoleer (When I get it in the mail, waiting sucks :/ ), because I'm in the process of getting up to speed.
On a side note, with just Malice clips on the pouch, it'll slide around. I put my belt through one clip, through my belt loop, and then through the other clip. Stays put with no issues.

EDC - minimum two on the body and several more handy in a bag.
In the field - two on the war belt and 3-4 on chest rig or vest. Since I'm usually carrying a TCCC bag or pack, if I have to sling to lay down my long gun, I want pistol reloads available.

Can you tell us more about the process to be allowed to carry there? And what kind of firearms are available? I presume its more difficult than in the US? Thanks!
