We just got in our first sets of Propper A-TACS FG BDUs to try out. I'll skip right to the point up front....these BDU's rock. If you havent seen my BDU/Camo comparison thread, just go look for it. Its in this forum. It will give you a bit of reference for where I am coming from in regards to my thoughts on these. I've still got to get Diz his to try out, and I'll let him post his own thoughts once he has his in hand.
First, Propper is doing their BDU's and ACU's in both the A-TACS AU (arid/desert) and FG (temperate/woodland) patterns. Diz and I both prefer buttons on our clothing, hence the reason we went with the older style BDU's over the newer ACU style which makes more use of velcro. We'll probably end up with some of the ACU style though at some point.
From my intial handling of these, they are very well made BDU's. Fit and quality are excellent. The material is their traditional Battle Rip material, which is a 65/35 Poly/Cotton ripstop material. Its a little stiff out of the box (but I've handle MUCH stiffer), however, as noted with my Digital Woodland items from Propper, they soften up very nicely with a little wear and a few washings. The material promises to be a very durable and long lasting one, which is something that is very important to us.
Now, on to the pattern. The A-TACS FG is the woodland version of A-TACS. You can read all the details behind it on the A-TACS website. Suffice to say, I find it to be very effective so far. I've only done a little initial testing via the below photos, but I think they speak for themselves. Even with most of the leaves gone from the brush and trees here, this stuff really disappeares. I can only imagine that once there are leaves and such back, it will work even better. Two things of note....first, the flash went off on a couple of the up close pics, and made them way brighter than they really are. Second, I intentionally left my face and hands uncovered, so that you could actually find me in the pics.
One of the things that Diz and I like about the A-TACS is the support behind it. Everything is available, from clothing, headwear, footwear, to materials and gear. We can only see it expanding as it catches on.
A few things we would like to see from A-TACS are....., some 50/50 NYCO ripstop material, and, some 70D waterproof ripstop nylon for making things such as poncho's, bivi sacks, and tarp shelters.
If Propper were to do these in the same design manner as the USMC's current MARPAT uniform, they would almost be the perfect BDU's in my mind. If them did them like that and in 50/50 NYCO.....well, that would be pretty much perfection. (hint hint Propper.... )
There are a lot of Propper dealers out there but, our friend DedicatedPro is a Propper dealer himself, so if there is anything that you want from the Propper line, be sure to let him know. We also have one other Propper dealer that we'll be introducing soon that is a good friend of ours also. So, here are the pics... More to come.
